I teach from an artistic viewpoint and do not
encourage choreography except in troupe presentations. My goal is
to teach form and musicality so you can dance from your spirit by
exploring the emotional range of the music with mind and body. Your
dance is a unique journey of self-expression that comes from within.
One reason many fall in love with belly dance is the freedom of
self-expression, cool music, costumes, good exercise and fun! In the Middle East, women and men of all
ages enjoy the benefits of this art form, it is the dance of their culture and a way of expressing emotions. Stress relief, improved
self image, strength, grace, body control, connection with the past, escape from mundane routines,
added spice, making new friends, and having fun while exercising are all
benefits of this dance.
European and Western views of Eastern cultures have long been seen
through a puritan filter, and Belly Dance is no exception. However, I
witness year after year the enriching effect the dance has on my life and
folks I know associated with it. I encourage everyone to give this
dance form a try before dismissing its validity as an art form, or
settling for any stereotype.
